- Abdullateef Aliyu, Lagos

Virgin Atlantic flew about 26 million passengers and operated over 12,000 flights to Nigeria within the past 17 years, the airline said. A statement to mark the anniversary said it served about four million glasses of bubbly and flew 38,600,000km on the Nigeria route within the period.

To celebrate the milestone, the airline is giving a 17% discount on flights from Lagos to London and U.S for a period of 72 hours using the discount code NW001 on online booking.

The airline said for 17 years, it had been connecting friends, uniting families, flying people to epic business meetings, conferences and life-changing deals.

Flying travellers on honeymoons, dream holidays and their must-see destinations, Virgin Atlantic has been making dreams come true for 17 years, it said.

Samuel Lindfield, Head of Virgin Atlantic in Nigeria, said, “It is with immense pride that we celebrate 17 years of flying to Nigeria, connecting Nigeria to the world through our London hub. We are incredibly thankful for the loyalty Nigeria has shown us over the past 17 years, and we look forward to sharing an exciting future together.”

The statement added that the airline had supported the careers of local Lagos entrepreneurs by linking them up with the founder and president, Sir Richard Branson, for longterm business mentoring.

One of those entrepreneurs became the face of the latest media campaign. The corporate social responsibility activities have also delivered over 200kg of medical supplies to local maternity wards, it added.
