Daily Trust: What was it like growing up, with a femous father?

We weren’t with him always because he was in Enugu and we lived in Aba with our mum. But on weekends we go visiting or he comes over and we have a great time. Having him around was fun because he liked to play with us and crack jokes. When we are together, he doesn’t go out throughout the weekend, except to church. He made us happy.

DT: What was it like having a funny dad?

It was nice because of the attention we got outside. A lot of people admired us. So, having him as dad was a thing of pride.

DT: Which of his films would you say is your favourite?

There were many of them and we were very young. I remember ‘New Masquerade’ and how some scenes played in my head, especially the way he treats the house boys.

DT: If your dad isn’t an actor, what other profession do you think he would have excelled at?

Okpala: He would have made a very good teacher because he likes to impart knowledge. He doesn’t like dull people. He likes being around smart people.

DT: What is most memorable about your childhood with your dad?

When we visit him in Enugu, because he stays alone, he cooks for us. DT: What is his favourite food?

It’s yam and stew. DT: What is it people don’t know about him that you will like to share?

People don’t know that he is a very calm person who doesn’t show off. DT: What easily upsets him?

When you don’t give good results, be it in your education or when he gives you a task. He gets upset.

DT: Was there ever a time when you wanted to follow in his footsteps? How has his profession influenced you?

There was a time when I wanted to go into acting, but he disagreed with my decision because of the way Nollywood is structured. He didn’t like the killings and rituals shown in their movies. He told me to stay on my career path. DT: How does he relax?

He likes to watch news or when he goes to play table tennis.
