NUJ gets new president

The South-East Bureau Chief of ThisDay Newspapers, Chris Isiguzo, yesterday emerged the new president of the Nigeria Union of Journalist­s (NUJ).

Isiguzo won the election at the just concluded 6th Delegates Conference of the union held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Returning Officer from the Nigeria Labour Congress, Benson Upah, declared Isiguzo winner, having polled 346 votes against Waheed Odusile The Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Lions Clubs is targeting treatment of over 200 million physically impaired people in the world this year, including 50million who got 329 votes.

Other contestant­s were Bamidele Atunbi, 101 votes, Abiodun Olalere, 56, Uzaka Abraham, 30, Jacob Edi, 16 and Alademka Adelegan, 9 votes. Announcing the results, Upah commended the peaceful conduct of all the participan­ts.

Lions Clubs target 50m Nigerians for eye treatment

Nigerians. The Internatio­nal President of the clubs, Gudrun Yugvandott­ir, who was in Nigeria to flag-off the vision and diabetes campaign, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja yesterday. She said though the club had been treating eye problems over the years, they decided to step up such services this year.

Yugvandott­ir also noted that since many people were suffering from diabetes, the body had also decided to help tackle the situation.
