NANS flays killing of student, seeks sack of service chiefs

- Chidimma C. Okeke

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the killing of a student of the University of Maiduguri, Ropvil Daciya Dalep by Boko Haram members.

Dalep was abducted on his way to school from Jos on January 9 alongside others.

A statement signed by the National President, Comrade Danielson Akpan, said after days with the group, Dalep, a member of NANS, was brutally killed on January 22 in a video that went viral.

Others are still held captive and suffering in the hands of their abductors, he said, adding that communities in the North East, especially in Adamawa and Borno states had come under heavy attack with many casualties without media report or were under reported.

“At the moment, there is no safe place in Nigeria as abduction is carried out close to the seat of power, Abuja and its environs. Travelers and commuters are regularly attacked, kidnapped and killed around Kogi, Kaduna and Jos routes,” he said.

He said the impact of the violent attacks had been devastating on the communities and Nigerian students who now live in fear could no longer attend school in these areas due to the killing and kidnapping.

“We call on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the service chiefs as they have lost touch with the reality. The rising insecurity in every part of the country must be curtailed, as we call for a halt in normalization of bloodletting. We shall commence action to get our country secured immediately,” he said.

No fewer than 10 loggers were killed and others were reported missing when suspected Boko Haram members attacked them in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday, vigilante sources said.

The incident occurred at about 10a.m. in Lura near Gajibo, about 10 kilometres from Dikwa, the local government headquarters as they collected firewood.

A Vigilante source said: “They attacked our people who went to fetch firewood in Lura village, some nine kilometres away from Dikwa town. 10 persons were found lifeless and we brought their dead bodies to Dikwa from the families to identify them.

“We buried them in the early hours of Friday according to Islamic rites. Unfortunately many are still missing. One of them who survived the attack, disclosed that many are yet to return home.”
