The chairman, Governing Council of the University of Lagos, Dr. Wale Babalakin (SAN), has defended the sack of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, insisting that the council followed due process in removing him.

Prof Abbas expressed his appreciation to all staff that voted for him during the community parley last week where he polled 1,026 votes to beat three other contestants to get community acceptance and subsequently emerge the 11th vice chancellor of the university.
“I need all the cooperation of the council in order to deliver from the responsibilities that attached to the office,” Prof. Abbas said.
He also promised to prioritize staff and students’ welfare while assuring the public-private partnership.
The spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Mrs. Julie Osagie Jacobs, said in a statement that other terms of reference of the committee include to prepare a template for coordination of inter-governmental policies, projects and programmes, harnessing sundry opportunities for collaboration and cooperation among all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) at all levels of governance to in Abuja said there was full compliance with the law in the removal of the vice chancellor.
He also said the Ministry of Education had been appropriately briefed on the council’s decision to sack him.
The council Wednesday announced the removal of Ogundipe over allegations of funds misappropriation but he described his removal as illegal even as the senate of the university and all staff unions backed him, saying he remained the vice chancellor.
Ogundipe has also sued the council, university community of his utmost support. He commended his predecessor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, for transforming the university’s standard in research, teaching and community services and wished him well in his future endeavors.
The pro-chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, congratulated the new VC and urged him to work assiduously with all the relevant stakeholders to maintain the university’s tradition of pursuing excellence in all ramifications.

He dismissed the threat of the unions and the university senate not to recognize the acting vice-chancellor appointed by the council, stressing that there is no crisis in UNILAG.
