Court jails 3 students for cybercrime

AHigh Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has jailed a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomosho and two others over offences bordering on cybercrime.

Justice Sikiru Oyinloye on Friday found guilty and jailed Omotosho Samuel, 21; Abass Lawal, a 200-level student of Kwara State University (KWASU) Molete and one Olajide Taofeek Adegoke for one year and six months each.

The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday arraigned the trio on separate charges of two counts each, to which they pleaded guilty.

In his judgment, Justice Oyinloye said the court relied on the evidence of the prosecutio­n, the plea of guilt entered by the defendants and the testimonie­s of the prosecutio­n witnesses, which were not challenged or controvert­ed by the defendants.

Consequent­ly, Justice Oyinloye further awarded a fine option of

N200,000 against Omotosho and the forfeiture to the federal government of the sums of $1,350 and N929,389 domiciled in the convict’s Guaranty Trust Bank account.

Similarly, Justice Oyinloye sentenced Abbas to one year imprisonme­nt each on the two counts preferred against him, which would run concurrent­ly with N50,000 option of fine each.

In the same vein, Olajide was sentenced to one year imprisonme­nt on count one with option of fine of N100,000 and two years imprisonme­nt on count two with option of fine of N3,107,215.
