PDP, APC supporters clash in Sylva’s LG over election materials
Abloody clash, late Thursday broke out at Twon Brass in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, where the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timipre Silva hails from when officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were offloading election materials.
The clash, which increased the heightened tension in the area, broke out following a misunderstanding that occurred between supporters of the APC and those of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over where the election materials should be kept ahead of today’s governorship election.
It was gathered that the PDP chairman in the local government area, Bara Daniel, was injured in the head by supporters of the APC, led by Victor Isaiah, a former local government chairman in the area.
But speaking with newsmen on Friday, Isaiah denied any involvement in the assault. He said that on the contrary, he saved the situation from getting worse, alleging that Daniel was the one intimidating APC supporters over how to secure the election materials.
“I was actually there to monitor the process of offloading the materials but the PDP chairman kept making derogatory statements, which unsettled some people, but I was able to calm the situation,” Isaiah said.
Daily Trust Saturday, however, gathered that normalcy was restored in the area after the intervention of some military personnel.
The chairman of Brass Local Government, Alabo Hanson Karika, strongly condemned the attack on the PDP chairman. He called on security agents to be at alert to prevent further violence.
