Explaining COP to a 9-year-old

- Ibraheem

Imagine a big meeting where leaders from almost every country come together. This special meeting is called the Conference of the Parties, or COP for short. They meet every year to talk about something super important: how to take care of our Earth!

You know how our planet has been facing some big problems, like changes in weather and things getting too hot? Well, these leaders at COPs are like Earth’s superheroes. They work together to find cool ways to solve these problems and make sure our planet stays healthy and happy.

At COPs, they talk about science stuff, like how the Earth works and what we can do to keep it safe. It’s like a big puzzle, and the leaders use their smarts to figure out the best ways to protect our home.

But it’s not just talking – they also play a game of sharing. Some countries have more resources, like money and technology, and they decide to share with others who need help. It’s like when you and your friends share toys or snacks. Everyone helps each other so that no one feels left out.

One of the coolest things they do at COPs is making promises. They promise to do things like using less energy and not putting too much icky stuff in the air. It’s like a big group promising to take care of the Earth and be good friends with nature.

COPs are also like a big science fair. People from different countries show off their cool ideas and inventions to help the Earth. It’s like showing your friends a new toy or a drawing you made. Everyone gets inspired and learns new ways to protect our planet.

So, why do they do all this? Well, it’s because our Earth is like a big family, and we need to take care of it together. COPs help us make sure our planet stays beautiful for a long, long time, and that’s something we all want, right?

So, next time you hear about COPs, remember they’re like a big team of superheroes making sure our Earth stays the best home ever. It’s like a fun adventure where everyone works together to save the day and keep our planet happy!

What’s COP28 UAE?

The next COP is called COP28 UAE which is happening in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, from November 30 to December 12, 2023. For two weeks, people from almost every country come together to talk about how to take care of our Earth.

At COP28 UAE, leaders from different countries will discuss and decide on important things to help our planet, like how to stop climate change and make sure the Earth doesn’t get too warm. The UAE, which is the United Arab Emirates, is hosting this meeting, and it’s a chance for everyone to work together and make real progress.

The meeting has two special areas: the Blue Zone and the Green Zone. The Blue Zone is where leaders and negotiators from countries talk officially. They have discussions and lots of events to figure out the best ways to take care of our environment. The Green Zone is for everyone else, like students, regular people, and companies. It’s a place to share ideas, talk about climate action, and learn cool things about helping the Earth.

The people organizing COP28 UAE believe that governments and companies should work together to fight climate change. They want to showcase good ideas and solutions in the Green Zone. There will be talks, panels, and fun activities to learn about how we can all make a difference.

Around COP, there are also many other events happening, kind of like side parties. People who couldn’t be part of the official zones organize these events. They’re not part of the main meeting, but they still talk about important stuff related to the Earth.

So, COP28 UAE is like a big teamwork event where everyone, including leaders, regular people, and companies, gets together to figure out how we can protect our planet. It’s a chance for us to learn, share ideas, and make a real impact on climate change!

Who is eligible to take part in COP28 UAE?

COP28 UAE is anticipated to be an important global event in 2023, drawing widespread attention. As a pivotal platform for making decisions on climate matters, it is set to welcome more than 70,000 participants,

comprising heads of state, global leaders, and representatives from 197 countries, the EU, along with numerous non-governmental organizations, businesses, youth groups, and various stakeholders. The aim is to foster consensus and advance initiatives for climate action on a broad scale.
