Gunmen kill 6 in Benue

- From Hope Abah, Makurdi

Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen killed six people including a community leader in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State yesterday. Daily Trust on Sunday reports that the invaders carried out the attack around mid-day at Gabo and Nenzev communities in Turan council wards of the Logo.

A member of the state House of Assembly representing the area, Terna-Kester Kyenge, who received the corpses during his on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected localities condoled with the bereaved families.

Kyenge further held a meeting with stakeholders of the communities as well as security agencies to find a lasting solution to the attacks which have become frequent in the area, just as he addressed hundreds of displaced people including women and children to remain calm.

The lawmaker condemned the attack and urged relevant authorities to bring the perpetrators to book, while calling on government to assist the displaced people who fled their homes for fear.

When contacted, the state coordinator of Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Garus Gololo, said he had summoned the leader of the Fulani in the area to find out the cause of the incident.

“I am tired of these incessant crises. While we are trying to work out a solution to nib it in the bud, both sides continue to go for reprisals. If the circle continues like this, then when will it end?” Gololo queried.

According to him, the fresh attack may have been over the killing of a Fulani boy last week by youths suspected to be Tivs.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, said five persons were killed in the area by the gunmen and that one person was still missing.

Yamu said the corpses have been recovered by the police as the search for the missing person continues.
