FRSC boss flays transport coy over crashes
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi has expressed disappointment over the high rate of crashes involving the vehicles of Peace Mass Transit (PMT), saying appropriate measures must be put in place for safety of the passengers and other road users.
The Head, Media Relations and Strategy, Bisi Kazeem, quoted the Corps Marshal as saying this while declaring open an interactive session between the FRSC and the management of the Peace Mass Transit, in a bid to find lasting solution to the problem.
Oyeyemi said the situation was alarming and that as the lead agency for road safety management and administration in the country, it must do something to address the situation.
“One of such safety measures is Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS) which was launched in 2007 as an intervention strategy for ensuring professionalism in road transport management in accordance with the FRSC Establishment Act 2007,” he stated.
He said over 5,000 drivers of fleet operators have been certified while 642 convoy drivers of governors were trained under the scheme. He said though Peace Mass Transit Limited was registered with the scheme, it still has to do more.
“Between January 2015 and December 2015, eight crashes were recorded by the company’s drivers involving 62 casualties. While seven were killed, 55 others were injured,” he said.
Between last year and January, up till June this year, he noted that 11 crashes were recorded.
He further stressed that all operators who engage in inter-state road transport services should establish a safety unit and appoint a safety officer as the head of the unit to ensure that operational standards are maintained as prescribed in the regulation guiding their operations. Mohammed, SPU and Mohammed Musa Katsina moved from Maritime to DS, NIPSS. AIG Katsina will be replaced at the Maritime Desk by Paul Okafor, CP Benue State.”
Ani said the Commission also approved the appointment of 37 Commissioners of Police including nine Deputy Commissioners of Police whose promotions were approved by the Commission.
He added that: “16 of these commissioners retained their Commands. They include, CP Peace Ibekwe Abdallah, Ebonyi;Emmanuel C. S. Ojukwu, Enugu; Frederick Taiwo Lakanu, Imo; Adeleye O. Oyebade, Oyo; Basen D. Gwana, Abia;Yunana Y. Babas, Taraba; Austine I. Iwar, Gombe; Murtala U. Mani, AkwaIbom and Ajani Fatai Owoseni, Lagos. CP Henry Fadairo was also moved from Research and Planning to Jigawa State.”
