The beauty of Ojude Oba festival in Ijebuland

The Ojude Oba is a festive event that is celebrated in Ijebuland, Ogun State, as it is known to be an annual event during which indigenes of the land both from far and near make a presence at the palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland for the carnival-like celebratio­n. This colourful festival is celebrated on the third day after Id-El-Kabir muslim festival. Ojude Oba is one of the most glamorous cultural and spiritual festivals in Ijebuland and in Ogun State in general. This is a celebratio­n that has traditiona­l, cultural, religious, as well as social significan­ce.

Being one of the greatest festivals in the land, the glitz and colours associated with the festival ranks among the most celebrated cultural festivals in Nigeria. According to history, the festival began when one of the leading personalit­ies in the community accepted Islam as his religion over 100 years ago. Although the festival began as purely a Muslim affair, it has over the years acquired new meaning as it now embraces features of local traditions. The festival begins with a muslim prayer by the chief imam after which linage praises to the king follows immediatel­y. While Muslims and non-Muslims are already assembled at the Awujale palace, singing and dancing with the principal chiefs of the town as they ride on horses to pay homage to the king, while he seats on his throne to receive his people.
