Police inspector killed as gunmen attack police station, empty armoury

- From Doyin Adebusuyi Ado Ekiti

Apolice inspector on duty was killed on Friday during an attack on the Ido Ekiti Divisional Police Station in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti by suspected gunmen numbering about 40.

It was gathered that the armoury of the police station was emptied by the attackers who blew off the roof top of the station. Daily Trust on Sunday learnt that the entire police station, including the asbestos were destroyed during the raid.

A detective attached to the station, who craved anonymity, said the suspected robbers invaded the police station around 7.20pm and destroyed virtually everything while ransacking all the rooms.

He said on entering the station, the heavily armed bandits rained bullets on the police inspector, who died on the spot.

When asked whether the attackers were there to free a detainee, the source said, “that is not true because nobody was detained in the cell at the time the incident took place”.

Our correspondent could not get the police reaction because the mobile phones of the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr Alberto Adeyemi, were switched off.

But a senior police officer, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that the PPRO had visited the station to get first hand information of the incident.
