President Buhari inherited many challenges – SGF

- From Johnkennedy Uzoma, Owerri By Saawua Terzungwe

The Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Engineer Babachir David Lawal, said in Owerri, Imo State, that the administration of President Mohammadu Buhari inherited insecurity and corruption among other challenges.

The SGF, who spoke after he was conferred with a Fellowship award by the Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo Khaki in Imo State during their 5th convocation ceremony, regretted the way the country was run by past leaders.

He maintained that the administration of President Buhari in less than two years has achieved a lot in the areas of insecurity and corruption.

He said: “President Mohammadu Buhari is laying the foundation for a secure and prosperous nation that Nigerians would not only desire but would all deserve.

“We must in earnest commence a new journey of rapid and sustained economic growth that will usher in prosperity for all our citizens. Despite the challenges that we are confronted with, Nigerians should not despair.

“Massive corruption has crippled our economy and dwarfed our individual potentials, including limiting the enterprising and intellectual capacity of our people”.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has threatened to file contempt charge against the party’s National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

The National Legal Adviser and member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Barrister Bashir Maidugu told Daily Trust on Sunday in a telephone interview yesterday, that the contempt charge would be filed by Sheriff in order for Makarfi to be prosecuted if he continues to parade himself as chairman or signs any document on behalf of the party.

He said the court had decided on the matter and urged the former Kaduna State governor to be mindful of the law.

“Henceforth, Makarfi should not sign any document relating to the PDP, because if he does it, we will charge him for contempt and that will lead to prosecution. He should obey the judgement of the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt and stop parading himself as chairman of the illegal caretaker committee,” he said.

Barrister Maidugu said Sheriff followed due process in re-opening the PDP national secretariat which was shut by the police since May, 2016, stressing that for anyone to describe the action of the former Borno State governor as criminal and illegal is laughable.

On the pains Nigerians are experiencing, the SGF said government was aware of the problem, assuring that efforts are being made to reverse the situation and revive the economy.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, in his speech, urged Nigerians to pray for the president to enable him deliver on his campaign promises.
