Lifestyle changes to cut down cholesterol
There are a lot to simple and easy lifestyle steps to follow to cut down on your cholesterol levels. High levels of cholesterol in the body can greatly increase the risk of exposure to heart diseases and other heart related problems. Dr Amadi Ikechukwu of the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja spoke to us on the issue and also added that apart from lifestyle, it is advisable to also go to the hospital to check your cholesterol level and if need be, get the right medications to help in reducing it. Choose healthier
fats: Oils with saturated fats found in protein food like red meat and dairy products - cheese and butter, raise your cholesterol level. Switch for healthier options such as white meat like chicken and fish or low fat dairy products.
Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have great heart health benefits and also reduce high blood pressure. Foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids include fish like salmon, mackerel and also nuts in general.
Increase soluble fiber in your diet: Soluble fiber also helps lower your cholesterol levels. Eating oats, bran, fruits, beans and other vegetables will give you the
soluble fibres you need. Increase your physical activity: Try and get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day even if it is in 10 minutes intervals. Walking up and down the stairs and taking brisk walks during lunch breaks can do that job. Also perhaps doing a few sit ups during advert breaks will also do. Lose weight: Being overweight also greatly increases your risk of high cholesterol and losing even if its 5% of your weight can go a long way. So perhaps joining a gym or creating a new diet for yourself can help you achieve that goal.
