- From Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, Minna

Professor James Boyi Omonu of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, (IBBUL) has warned that unless Nigerians shun sedentary lifestyle heart-related death would continue to be on the rise.

The professor of Human Kinetic and Health Education, who spoke during the 8th inaugural lecture of the University, said the situation was further compounded by lack of exercise by most Nigerians despite the high consumption of junky foods.

“Most human deaths from lifestyle-related diseases could be averted if only people would adhere strictly to regular physical exercise instead of resorting to orthodox medication,” he said.

In a paper titled, “Physical Exercise: the best antidote to lifestyle-related diseases” Prof Omonu averred that sedentary lifestyle resulted in overweight, obesity and cardiovascular issues due to imbalance of intake and expended calories and the consequent sudden and silent death.

He pointed out that the only potent antidote to most silent killer diseases occasioned by sedentary lifestyle was regular exercise which he explained has enormous health and financial advantages over orthodox medication.

In his remark, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mohammed Nasir Maiturare, said that the institution had declared every Wednesday as sports day in order to ensure participation of staff and students in physical exercises.

He lauded the lecturer for the success of the lecture which he said will impact positively on the lives of the university community and the society in general, adding that the lecture was timely considering the increasing cases of sudden death in the country
