No intention to increase tuition fees – FUT Minna

- By Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, Minna

The Federal University of Technology (FUT) management has said that it has no plan to increase tuition fees, as recently reported by the media.

The chairman of the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU), Mr Deji Omole, was quoted in the media as alleging fees hike by the management of the 38 federal universities across the country.

However, in a statement by Lydia Legbo, deputy director, information and publication yesterday, the FUT Minna management condemned what it referred to as “totally false and baseless allegation, capable of causing panic and confusion.”

The management reiterated in the statement that the university does not collect tuition fees from its Nigerian students, but only charges minimal fees for other services, adding that for the past two years, the fees have not been reviewed.

It also noted that the review of any fees is solely the responsibility of the university’s Senate and that nothing like that had been discussed in any of its meetings in recent times.

It also said normally “such reviews are done at the beginning of a new academic session and the university is currently in the middle of the 2nd semester of the 2016/2017 academic session.”

The statement therefore urged parents, guardians and other stakeholders’ to disregard the report, “as the management carries stakeholders along, especially on issues that have direct effect on the welfare of staff and students.”
