Agood night’s sleep is very essential for your wellbeing. The quality of your sleep depends a lot on the quality of your mattress. Yes! You heard right. Your matress plays a vital role when it comes to your health. The importance of a good mattress to the health has been discussed widely, yet few people actually do something to improve their mattresses.

An old mattress, or one that is not appropriat­e for your body type, can damage a lot more than your sleep. Tambari spoke to Dr. Ikechukwu Amadi of the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja on the effects of sleeping on a bad mattress, and here, he says, is how your mattress is ruining your health

Increases stress level: Stress is caused by a lot of things, including a wrong mattress. Your mattress is directly related to your stress level, as the back pain you suffer from sleeping on an old mattress and the irritabili­ty linked to a poor sleep increases the levels of cortisol (a steroid hormone) in your body.

Leads to back pain: Another common problem of sleeping on an old or wrong mattress is back pain. Your mattress can actually promote back pain and prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. A good mattress should actually provide relief to back pain. Snoring: One of the factors overlooked when trying to decipher the cause of snoring is the mattress. If your mattress is not supporting your body properly, your airways may be under tension or the tissues may be sunken, which leads

snoring. Mattresses take the shape of your body, which makes your airways to block easier. Although snoring is not uncommon, few people understand the dangers of snoring, which actually have the potential to be fatal.

Lead to a weak immune system: Sleeping on an old mattress prevents you from getting a high quality sleep, which weakens your immune system. This is how you will become more prone to colds, as well as other types of illnesses, even severe ones.

Memory impairment: Another side effect of a bad mattress is memory impairment. If you start suffering from poor memory, it could be due to your poor sleep, which, in turn, is due to your poor mattress. During deep sleep, your brain takes past informatio­n and transforms them to memories, if you do not get quality sleep, your brain is not going to form the memories the right way, which leads to memory impairment.
