Why we staged Independence Golf tournament - Ameh
The Captain of IBB International Golf and Country Club, Sunday Ameh has said the club organised the 57th Independence Golf tournament to foster unity among Nigerians.
Ahmeh stated this while speaking to the press during the tournament in Abuja on Monday.
He said: “It’s [the tournament] to celebrate our anniversary and to use it as a means of going back to the memory lane to remember how our forefathers fought tirelessly to free us from colonialism.”
The Club Captain also said the tournament was a means of reminding participants that the unity of Nigeria is important.
“At IBB International Golf and Country Club, you will find out that it’s a combination of all Nigerians. It’s a microcosm of Nigeria where you find all tribes and all religions.
“If we can live together within this community harmoniously like brothers and sisters, we see no reason why Nigeria should not remain as one.”
Also, the Vice President of Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN), Ekanem Ekwueme who said she was enjoying her time at the tournament, stressed that it was important to celebrate Nigeria having gone through several trials over the years.
“We are happy that we are still together,” she said. “There is no mayhem, no chaos and it’s worth celebrating.”
250 golfers both from Nigeria and Ghana participated in the tournament that started on Saturday with the doubles and ended on Monday.
Winners at different categories were presented with trophies during a colourful dinner at the end of the tournament.
