Protein treatments for silkier and healthier hair

- By TAMBARI

Natural hair tends to be the hardest to cater for. It is hard to find what exactly works for your hair however it is key to keep in moisturized and ensure it retains it too. But what many people don’t know is that 70% of our hair is made up of protein which is why it is important to add and replace the replenished protein every now and then. There are many ways to do this by using treatments and conditioners. Your hair may be giving you signs that it’s in need of a protein treatment. Here’s how you can tell when it’s time for a protein treatment.

Limp hair: If your hair feels limp, then it means you need a protein treatment. This is usually caused by a lack of sufficient protein in the hair.

No elasticity: Hair with no bounce back or elasticity is more prone to breakage which is very bad for length retention. You can test this with wet strands of your hair.

Heat: It is important to do what’s a necessary for your hair before using any type of direct heat to strengthen the cuticles against heat damage. By doing this, your hair can look sleek from the outside and healthy from the inside too.

Hair colouring: Hair dyes tend to lift the cuticle in order to colour your hair. It can really damage your hair because of how it strips hair of it’s natural protein making it brittle. Doing a protein treatment will replenish all the protein lost in the colouring process.

Shedding: If you notice an increase of hair shedding after combing or brushing your hair, it means the protein level of your hair is quite low. A protein treatment can decrease the amount of breakage and shedding and heal split ends.

However, if buying protein masks or treatments are a bit pricey for you, there are DIY options you can do at home too. Using eggs, mayonnaise and yogurt are great ways to replace lost protein too without breaking the bank. Either way, keep your natural fro popping by giving it the care it needs.
