Ogbeh refutes claims of land grab for cattle colony
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has denied accusations that the Federal Government was seizing farmlands from locals for its “Cattle Colony” programme.
The minister who said there was no iota of truth in the allegation, said the Federal Government never planned to take land away from local farmers for herdsmen as alleged.
Speaking on the issue in Abuja, Ogbeh stressed that if the conflicts between farmers and herders are not dealt with quickly, Nigeria runs the risk of damaging its harmony and cohesive existence.
The minister expressed dismay that when colonies are discussed, the immediate reaction is that of an attempt to seize Nigerian land, hand them over to Fulani- herders to colonise.
According to him, the intention is not for the Fulani or anyone for that matter to colonise any territory but provide safe haven for cattle to graze in peace, under a controlled environment to prevent conflicts.
Chief Ogbeh pointed out that 16 states have indicated their interest to participate and pledged to make land available for the programme.
The minister noted that colonies will end cattle tortuous trekking, lead to better feeding, quality meat, provision of good water for the animals to drink and good veterinary services.
