Re: Makurdi streets becoming refuse dump

- Ayoola Imran wrote from Makurdi

Itotally agree with the Daily Trust report of Wednesday, January 24, 2018, on the indiscriminate disposal of wastes in Makurdi metropolis in Benue State. Dumping of refuse on major roads in areas such as: High Level, Police Barracks, Naka Road, Otukpo Road Kashio, Ichama Street along Old Customs office, has become a source of concern as the action does not only disfigure the city, but endangers the populace.

Many residents in the city also dump refuse in gutters, thereby causing blockage of drainages.

The sight of refuse heaps across the state is disgusting to say the least. The government needs to provide adequate trash cans to enable residents dispose their refuse appropriately. The state environmental laws should be vigorously enforced and punitive measures should be taken against violators. People need to understand the danger of indiscriminate dumping of refuse. The media should equally embark on a public awareness campaign against this bad practice.

The National Orientation Agency(NOA) should also sensitize people in the rural and urban areas on the importance of keeping their environments clean. Market women should be equally carried along in all the sanitation programmes of the government. Furthermore, committees should be set up in districts to ensure proper care of the environment.
