Korean centre teaches kite making at culture day

- By Abdullateef Salau

The Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) held its monthly cultural day at the KCCN Studio in Abuja during which participants were taught the basics of making traditional Korean Kite.

Rabiat Bobboi, Administrative Assistant at the centre, said the event was organized to expose Nigerians to Korean Kite-flying, a tradition to welcome the lunar new year, which is widely celebrated in that country.

South Koreans, both young and old, fly kite to ward off bad luck and welcome good luck into their lives. Guests at the event watched a video showing the rudiments of Kite making after which they made their customized kites.

“This is new year. We thought it an opportunity to introduce it to Nigerians and also to use it as a way of ridding ourselves of bad lucks in this 2018 and welcome good luck,” Bobboi said.

“Every month, we introduce one aspect of Korean culture and sometimes, compare it to Nigerian culture. We look at the differences and similarities between the two cultures,” said Mee Youn, KCCN’s cultural consultant.

The purpose is to strengthen the cultural ties between Nigeria and South Korea, she added.

Youn listed other cultural programmes lined up to include tea ceremony, film screening, quiz competition and poetry feast.

Some of these programmes, she said, are being organized in collaboration with government agencies, like Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), Secondary Education Board (SEB), including designers’ and artists’ associations.
