Kano LG elections: Results to be announced today

- From Yusha’u A. Ibrahim, Kano

The results of the Kano State local government election will be announced today, the state’s Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, has said. Speaking with newsmen yesterday in Kano, Garo assured that the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) would sweep all the 44 local government chairmanship and 484 councillors positions.

Garo said, “the election was peaceful. There were no reports of violence in any of the 44 local government areas in the state. Voters performed their civic duty peacefully.

“We are expecting the results to come later in the night (yesterday) and it will be announced tomorrow (today).”

Kano held local government elections yesterday for the 44 local government chairmen and 484 councillors.

However, Daily Trust on Sunday observed that there was delay in the delivery of sensitive materials to polling stations across the 44 local government areas, especially in the morning hours.

A source close to the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) told our correspondent that the delay was caused by the contractor handling supply of the items.

“The sensitive election materials left the premises of the KANSIEC to various polling across the 44 local government areas around 11am,” said the source.

At Giginyu and Tarauni wards in Nassarawa and Tarauni local governments, the voters’ turnout was impressive even though voting did not commence at the stipulated time.

The situation was the same at Badawa polling station, as voters came to the polling units on time but could not cast their votes due to lack of election materials.

Reports from Gyadi-Gyadi, Gandun-Albasa, Fagge, Gobirawa, Sabon-Gari, Gawuna, Gama, Brigade, Yankaba, Sauna, Kawaji, Mariri and Hotoro indicated that the poll was also conducted peacefully.
