Reps: We’re vindicated on NHIS boss

- By Musa Abdullahi Krishi

TheHouseofRepresentatives is vindicated on its resolution that the suspension of the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Prof Usman Yusuf was wrong, the chairman of the committee on healthcare services, Chike Okafor has said.

Yusuf was suspended in July last year by the Minister of Health Prof Isaac Adewale, citing corruption allegations against the NHIS boss and ordered an investigation.

Consequently, the House in a motion by Okafor demanded Yusuf’s recall and resolved to probe the matter. But Yusuf was on Tuesday reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Chike, whose committee was given the task of investigating the issue, told Daily Trust on Sunday in Abuja that Yusuf’s reinstatement was a welcome development, applauding Buhari for taking the bold decision.

“I can simply say that we have been vindicated. The National Assembly, House of Reps, especially my committee has been vindicated. I want to thank the president for listening and agreeing with us”

“We faulted the suspension in the first place when it was made. We felt that it wasn’t right, because it was coming on the heels of his appearance before an investigative hearing that we conducted on the activities of the scheme and HMOs.

“We felt that his suspension was as a result of the revelations that he made during the hearing. We sought to protect him and asked that the House should compel the minister to recall him,” he said.
