Health precautions to take during the rainy season

- by RAHMA L. ADAMU

Rainy season is a welcome change from the scorching sun. Nothing compares to the fresh smell of rain on the earth. This is also the season where the body; particularly the digestive system, is most liable to infections.

With the rainy season around the corner, here are a few tips to stay safe and healthy while you enjoy the cool weather.

Dr. Tolulope Tolufase of Federal Road Safety Clinic, Abuja mentioned a few things to bear in mind.

Watch your food: Try to eat nutritious food and avoid eating out throughout the rainy season. Avoid raw vegetables and salads unless they are consumed at home where you can wash and clean them thoroughly. Wash your hands often; especially before and after eating. There’re risks of flu, virus and germs entering your body through the nose, eyes and mouth. So refrain from the urge of touching your face as much as you can.

Herbal tea: Give your body some much needed natural treat during the season by drinking herbal teas like moringa, peppermint, hibiscus and turmeric/ginger. Keep your home clean and

pest free: Constantly ensure that there is no water logging in your home because it can be a breeding place for mosquitoes and other harmful bacteria. Use mosquito repellents to keep them at bay.

Clothes and footwear: Dress appropriately for the weather to keep your body warm. During this season, usually clothes do not get dry easily because the sun doesn’t shine. So don’t wear damp clothes even if they are slightly as it can lead to microbial growth.

Avoid wearing closed shoes as they hold water and make your foot sodden. Wear waterproof shoes or open footwear.

Always carry an umbrella or raincoat so that you don’t get wet by rain, but when you do, take a hot shower immediately and dab your neck and head with eucalyptus oil.

Adhere to these tips as much as you can in order for your mind, body and soul to relish the season. Also, try to stay hydrated during this season

Dr. Tolufase also added, “Cold or damp weather season can easily trigger spastic attack in asthmatic patient as their airways are very sensitive. Therefore, they need to be extremely careful especially at night. Take your medication exactly as prescribed and discuss with your doctor. Also, do not prescribe an antibiotics for yourself as antibiotics are medications that fight infections caused by bacteria, but the flu is cause by a virus.”
