Mankind’s relationship with democracy is a rather blunt tale: either we are fighting to achieve democracy or fighting to keep it. Democracy is never given or, once possessed, is it assured. Democracy is something that calls to us through an appeal to the best of human nature; but it never comes to us simply by its own volition. We must go to it and for it.

Yet, for reasons of self-interest, not everyone takes this journey. And those who do not want it also seek to prevent others from doing so.

Every nation, generation, and institution that adheres to democracy, thus, has called unto itself a challenge. This challenge is birthed of troubles from within. Will we fight to overcome those forces that seek to keep us from the democracy we cherish? This is the story of the APC congresses and primaries. must be allowed to state their case in an attempt to persuade their neighbor that their case is the better one. The practice of democracy requires humility, restraint and a level of human compassion. You must come to respect and honor viewpoints and even people you may dislike as if they are as important to you as you are to yourself.

This difficult path is the only way we can ensure honesty and fairness. It is the only way we can give the voices of all party members their just due. It is also the best way to ensure the most popular candidate wins and that party members are galvanized and invested in the nominations the party ultimately makes.

I say to those unconvinced that democracy should prevail that we are not intrinsic enemies. We all are human. To live is to err. But to forgive and reconcile is of a higher purpose. Many things can be reconciled in this life. Good friends, even brothers, can argue yet later reach lasting agreement. Loving spouses may exchange words but the bond of enduring affection binds them to a vital purpose that compels them toward a meeting of minds.

We, as the APC, stand with animosity toward none and the best hopes for all our members. With liberality of spirit and brotherly affection, there is little that cannot be mended, no disagreement that cannot be resolved. However, all actions and agreements must be grounded firmly in the principles of democratic representation. There can be no compromise of this essential principle.

Consequently, we seek to resolve the issues that entered into some of the ward congresses. Meanwhile, we shall work to improve and perfect the democratic quality of all subsequent congresses and primaries.
