CBN Tennis Championsh­ip: 300 players battle for N700,000 prize money

Over 300 Tennis players drawn from across the country are participat­ing at the 40th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Men and women Open Tennis Championsh­ip.

The tourney which served-off on June 21 at the Package ‘B’ tennis courts of the National Stadium Abuja will run till June 30, 2018

Participan­ts include, former Champions, Henry Atseye and Christy Agugbom, former three-time Champion Shehu lawal and reigning women champion, Sarah Adegoke as well as Nonso Madueke, Blessing Samuel and Aanu Aiyegbusi among other.

While speaking on the 10-day championsh­ip, the Central Bank Ag Director Corporate Communicat­ions, Isaac Okorafor stated that the CBN Senior Tennis Championsh­ip has come to stay.

He further stated that the sum of N700,000 has been set aside as prize money for the winners of both the men’s and women’s singles Category while the runners-up in both categories will be rewarded with N500,000 each.

While urging parents to encourage their wards to take to sports especially tennis, Mr Okorafor made mention of talents discovered by CBN who are representi­ng Nigeria at internatio­nal competitio­ns.

A total of 128 players are captured in the men’s singles draw chat of 64 while the women singles chat has 64 athletes drawn.

The Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Men and women Open Tennis Championsh­ip ends on Saturday, June 29, 2018 when the grand finale will be decided.

During his visit to the players in the dressing room, Adesola implored the players to sustain the momentum and seal up their qualificat­ion to the knockout stage with a victory against perennial World Cup opponents Argentina.

The Super Eagles play their last Group match against Argentina on Tuesday 26, June 2018 while Group leaders Croatia take on Iceland.
