Thugs vandalise APC secretariat in Rivers

- From Victor Edozie, Port Harcourt

Aparallel secretariat belonging to the Senator Magnus Abe faction of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Rivers State was vandalised yesterday by thugs, Daily Trust on Sunday gathered.

A witness said the thugs who were allegedly accompanied by men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) invaded the parallel secretariat located at the popular Waterline junction, Port Harcourt, in the early hours of yesterday and vandalised the building which was undergoing renovation.

Our correspondent reports that windows and doors of the building were smashed while party flags hoisted on metal poles were pulled down.

Portrait of President Muhammadu Buhari, APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, as well as that of Senator Magnus Abe, which hung on the wall of the main office at the secretariat were also destroyed.

One of Abe’s supporters and lawmaker representing Ikwerre Federal Constituency in the House of Representative, Chidi Wiyoka, condemned the attack.

He said that the vandalization of Abe’s parallel secretariat is a criminal act and called on the Inspector General of Police to arrest those behind it.

“Whoever that is behind this should be arrested and made to pay for the damages done to the secretariat. We are in a civilised society and people should not take laws into their hands.

“We condemn a situation where men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad will be used to cause mayhem. The vandalised secretariat is the authentic secretariat of APC in Rivers State. Court verdict is very clear on who is the genuine chairman of APC in Rivers State,” he said.

The chairman of the APC in Amachree, had on Tuesday warned that the leadership of the party in the state will clamp down on any parallel secretariat.

He stated that the APC had only one secretariat in Rivers State. When contacted, the state Publicity Secretary of the APC, Chris Finebone, said he was not in Port Harcourt and would not know who was behind the vandalization of the secretariat.
