Why NSF, NYG organisers dropped Shooting sport – Adeoye

The President of the Nigeria Shooting Federation, Brig Gen Oladeji Adeoye (Rtd) has decried the non-inclusion of shooting in the National Youth Games as well as the upcoming National Sports Festival.

In a chat with Fever Pitch, Adeoye stated that shooting was to have been included as part of the sports in the National Youth Games in Ilorin but was dropped because the organisers said “they don’t want to start training the children how to shoot.”

Adeoye expressed his sadness when again the game was not included in the Sports Festival as it has no age barrier.

According to him, “we have the shooters in the military and para-military who are raring to go but the organisers of the National Sports Festival are saying there are no funds”.

He however appealed to the ministry and corporate organisations to look into what the game can offer the country while drawing comparison to other nations who train their citizens from the age of 4 years.

“Shooting is a multi-medal sport that should be harnessed. Just as the Minister of Sports once said, Sports brings peace, development, job creation to the country, he said.”

He reiterated the federation’s determination to vie for honours in international competitions as they have the largest shooting para athletes in the whole of Africa.

“We have four international competitions ahead of us and we will sponsor ourselves comprising of the military and para-military personnel,” he said.
