Things to know before dyeing your hair

- by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

Sometimes we get the urge to do something that’s a little outside the box. And dyeing your hair may be one of those things. But dyeing your hair isn’t as simple as it sounds, and getting it right and maintaining it can be a handful of tedious work. That’s why, this week we are taking you step by step through all you need to know before you dye your hair.

Mask or deepcondition your hair: For the ladies, hair damage is a huge no-no, as unhealthy hair is the last thing any of us want. So in order to prevent this from happening, make sure you deep-condition or apply a mask from the roots to the end of your hair the day before dyeing it.

Dyeing your hair makes it fuller and silkier: Yes, it’s true. So be prepared to have more manageable hair, but only if you are going to properly take care of it. So styling will become easier and hassle-free. Switch up your hair products: After dyeing your hair, you are going to have to throw out all your old hair creams, shampoos and conditioner for colour-safe products that don’t have any harsh chemicals. This way, you won’t risk any hair damage or fading hair colour. Protect your hair from sunrays: For the guys, either stay out of the sun or wear a hat. And as for the ladies, wrap your hair up in a veil or turban on sunny days. The sun will bleach the dye and cause it to fade very quickly. No swimming: You can swim as long as you wear a swimming cap, so that your hair doesn’t come in contact with the pool water. The chlorine and salts in the pool will cause havoc to your hair, so it is best you avoid it so that your dyed hair doesn’t bleed out or become straw-like.
