Again, Boko Haram Attempts to overrun Military Base

- From Olatunji Omirin, Maiduguri

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents yesterday attempted to overrun another military base in their continuous onslaught against troops in Mainok town of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, sources said.

The Abubannawi faction stormed Mainok, along the Maiduguri/ Kano highway at about 6:20pm, and headed towards the military formation, raining bullets on the base.

According to a security source, the attackers engaged the troops for about an hour before five gun trucks were mobilized from Benishiek town to assist the troops.

“Yes, the military base near Mainok town was under attack by suspected Abubannawi faction of insurgents this evening, we don’t know the extent of damage. However, there was reinforcement from Benisheik . I can’t say if they gained access to the base but it was a gun battle,” the security source said.

A resident of the Mainok, Mustapha Ali, told our correspondent that the insurgents didn’t attack civilians, but that the whole community is deserted.

“As we are speaking now, I am on the tree because these people can’t be trusted. We saw them coming from Benisheik axis and they were shooting at the military base. Everywhere is quiet now, but the town is deserted,”Ali said.

The military operatives were yet to comment on the matter at the time of filing this report.
