1st National conference on sports education opens in Abuja
In a bid to finding lasting solutions to the challenges of schools’ sports and developing the general grassroots sports in Nigeria, major sports stakeholders in Nigeria will come together to hold the 1st National Conference on Sports Education in Nigeria.
In a press conference held at the National Stadium, the Permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Olusade Adesola represented by the Head, Public-Private Partnership in the ministry, Mr Bolaji Oladejo praised the organisers for the initiative which is timely as it aims to revive sporting culture in schools.
“We are not doing enough to take that thing that unites everyone in the country. Sports does not speak any language or practice any religion. Sports is an asset to us in Nigeria and we must not allow it to lie fallow. We need to focus on grassroots sports development,” he emphasised.
“We believe the conference will resuscitate inter house sports to ensure that we take grassroots sports to the next level.”
In the same vein, the chairman, Organising Committee, Mr Philip Femi Azeigbe stated that the vision of the summit is to complement existing efforts on legislative and policy formulations cum implementations geared towards improving and upgrading sports in Nigerian schools.
According to him, the “summit will create wider windows for increasing talents discovery, youths’ participation and sustaining active capacity building in sports.”
The sports summit project which is expected to be declared open by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo is in conjunction with the federal ministries of youth sports development, education as well as the National Orientation Agency is set to hold at the Package B of the National Stadium, Abuja from 19th to 23rd November, 2018.
