2019: Many Lagosians are migrating, says Jimi Agbaje

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, yesterday kicked off his campaign, promising to end the reign of “vested interest,” which he said has retarded the growth of the state.

He said contrary to the thinking in some quarters, Lagos is not working because “it is the vested interest that has determined the direction of the state in the last 20 years.”

Agbaje, who addressed some party members and journalists, said the state had spent over $6 trillion in the last 20 years “with nothing to show for it.”

He said Lagos is the only mega city in Africa, without effective transportation system, adding that the construction of a light rail system has taken more than a decade to complete.

He said Lagos, as currently constituted does not guarantee a future for Lagosians, adding, “this explains why many youths of Lagos are migrating abroad.”

While anchoring his campaign on three thematic areas of livability, economy and the future, he said his major consideration would be to make life easy for Lagosians, to discourage the current wave of migration and encourage people to stay back and invest in the state.

He decried the worsening traffic situation in the state, promising to tackle the problem on assumption of office.

Agbaje said the 2019 poll is a contest “between people’s Lagos and one-man Lagos,” adding that he is on the side of people’s Lagos.
