Hair breakage tips for harmattan

- by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

As harmattan comes at us in full swing, it is time to prep up for what comes with it, most especially hair loss. The season’s winds can be very harsh to our hair, and if not careful, by the time the season ends, it would have taken your hair along with it. Here are a few things to observe to see that you keep your hair well protected from breakage.

Moisturise: You have to start moisturising more than you usually do, as your hair is going to be drier than usual. Keep a spray bottle of water and oil and spritz your hair with it as often as possible.

Don’t wash too frequently: Washing your hair frequently will strip it of all the oils it needs to stay moisturised. So instead of using a shampoo to wash your hair, switch it with a conditioner and co-wash your hair more instead. This way, your hair is washed and still very moisturised afterwards.

Protective styling: Box braids, bantu knots and simple braids will protect your hair from the harsh winds and keep all the oils locked in. This will also reduce how much you manipulate your hair with excessive brushing and combing that will almost definitely lead to hair breakage.

Deep condition: Deep-conditioning with products like hair mayonnaise and cholesterol infused with sheabutter,

olive oil or coconut oil will help in strengthening your hair and retaining moisture, which is key to preventing hair loss.

Stay away from heat: Using hair dryers and straighteners are not a good idea, most especially since they can only cause more damage due to how dry the hair will become. Remember, oil and water are what you need the most to stop your hair from breaking. So it is best to keep the heat to a minimal, or preferably, take a break from it until the season ends.
