School play x-rays corruption
The Spanish Embassy, Abuja, has announced the 12th edition of its annual visual arts competition. A release by the embassy said the event themed, ‘Spanish Festivals and Traditional Celebrations,’ will feature an awards ceremony and art exhibition of the finalists of the 2018 outing.
It also said over 70 entries were submitted this year for the competition, from all parts of the country. There were paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and mixed media works.
According to the release, there was an initial pre-selection process, with 18 works reaching the final. On Tuesday 6th December, the selection panel met to analyse the artworks, their relation to the topic, their artistic and technical qualities, which altogether lead to the selection of three artworks that will be given awards.
The selection panel was constituted by H.E. Mr. Marcelino Cabanas Ansorena, Ambassador of Spain, Mrs. Chinze Ojobo, President of the Female Artists Association of Nigeria, Mr. Jess Castellote, Art Collector and author of several books on Nigerian arts, Mrs. Mary Ameh, Representative of the Society of Nigerian Artists and Mr. Chris Obadan, Representative of the National Gallery of Art.
Finalists include Abbas Tomi Segun, Adaoma Joy Nnabeze, Attahiru Abubakar, Chukwuemeka Jude Okwuba and Deborah Ebute Jonathan. Others are Essang Etim Effiong, Helen Ogochukwu Nzete, Ibrahim Mohammed Afegbua and Iphang-Ishor David Ngaji.
Also on the list are Keleshi PAGE 27 PIC3.JPG Charles Nwaneri, Kingsley Nnaemeka Ebunyebe, Modestus Chukwuka Ukeoma, Nguher Gabrielle Zaki and Odinakachi Kingsley Okorafor.
Oluwasegun Charles Phillips, Onyinye Maryrose Afam, Sor Sen and Ugochukwu Julius Iroegbu also made the list.
The exhibition, billed for October 11 at the Thought Pyramid Art Centre, Abuja, is organised in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art and will showcase the works of the finalists and the winners unveiled.
Olashore International School staged a play titled, ‘Etiti: All Eyes on You’ last week to celebrate her 25th anniversary in Abuja. The play focused on contemporary issues in the Nigerian society, ranging from corruption, unemployment, injustice, violence, and several more that eat at the country like a cancer. It addresses various issues, most especially problems confronting the youths and the nonchalance of some people in power.
‘Etiti: All Eyes on You’ aims to reawaken leaders’ consciousness of the fact that there is an seeing eye who watches every deed, good or evil.
Prince Abimbola Olashore, who is the Chairman, Board of Governors, described the play as contemporary and added that, “if you are not doing something for the youth, it will create a problem for them down the road, especially now that election is around the corner. Elders need to create opportunities for the youth to express themselves.”
The producer/director of the play, Mr Fatomiloya Oladosu said the play aims at making Nigerians look inward.
Olashore International School was established in 1994 and is located at Iloko-Ijesa, Osun State.
