Why peace remains priceless

- Dr. Aliyu Dahiru Muhammad is of the Bayero University, Kano.

Regardless of creed or nation, what all humans and even animals are looking for in this world is peace. Fear, insecurity, war, conflict, infliction, inflammatory statements, instability, intimidation, threat, crisis and violence are as a result of lack of peace and all creations dislike them. For Muslims, we are very much aware of the significance of peace in our lives and the need for peaceful co-existence with others (Muslims and nonMuslims alike). Islam itself means peace. Allah Subhanahu WaTaala reminds Quraish about some of his major favours to them i.e. saving them from hunger and from fear. This is relevant even today. Any country without peace can neither attract foreign direct investment nor can it be ranked high by any standard except for the worst.

Despite this, incontestable evidence suggests that there are some corruptible individuals that, due their moral bankruptcy persist and insist on causing chaos in the society. If these people can listen, let them be reminded that whoever ignites violence is cursed by Allah. Let them know that whatever evil they do will bounce back and they may suffer here as well as in the hereafter.

Election, selection, politics, economics, north, south or whatever it is, provides no justification for causing chaos in a society. It is prohibited to cause panic to another person. Responsible societies engage their leaders to deliver well not leaders who engage the populace to fight each other. We must understand and be on the alert that some few individuals gamble with our future and that of our children. We must be aware that we are blessed with a unique, unshaken flat earth to live peacefully and pursue our worldly and spiritual journeys. We have only one country and we should protect it. If one thinks peace is too expensive let him try violence.

In view of this, I call on all Nigerians to shun violence in any form. Sabotaging other peoples` efforts, telling lies, threatening people in any situation, especially during elections, manoeuvring in any form are punishable in Islam. Let us stick to justice as its closer to God-fearing.
