Getting your groove back after Sallah festivities

- By ABIOLA AMINAT ADEPOJU

Most of us, especially those who have a history of dieting, are currently trying to lose weight, or due to health challenges have decided to be more health-focused. In reality, our bodies are amazing and can bounce back fairly quickly after a break from your routine. However, it is important to get back on track as soon as you can follow these steps.

Drink water: This is the most important step you should take after holidays. You have probably been eating and drinking things that are high in sodium, sugar and so on. Water is very essential in helping your body detox. Drinking water helps boost your metabolism, cleanse your body of waste, and acts as an appetite suppressant. Also, drinking more water helps your body to stop retaining water, leading you to drop those extra pounds of water weight, says Dr. Tope Abayomi of UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Akure. So drink at least 8 cups of water per day to help your body bounce back quickly.

Eat healthy: When we say eat healthy, it doesn’t just mean counting calories, it means eat well. Don’t try to make up for the extra calories you consumed during Sallah by skipping meals. That leaves you hungry; instead, cut back with a series of small meals packed with fruits and vegetables. Don’t starve yourself out of guilt; that’s unhealthy. However, you have to be conscious every time your hand goes from a plate to your mouth.

Get some exercise: Exercise is a good idea after indulging during festivities. However, if you were not a big exercise person before

Sallah, don’t rush in to do a mega workout to try to burn off all the calories you just ate. If you overload and do more than your body can take, you could strain a muscle or hurt yourself. So ease yourself into exercising slowly.

Ignore weigh-ins: It is normal that you want to know how much you have gained over the break. Don’t get discouraged when you see you have added a few pounds. After a feast like Sallah, you may weigh more. That’s not because you gained body fat, but because of water retention from extra salt that was in the food you ate. So don’t weigh yourself, and if you do, don’t allow the number of the scale get to you. Just focus on eating healthy and not on the numbers. With additional information from the internet
