Whiten your teeth naturally

- by ABIOLA AMINAT ADEPOJU

Stained or yellow teeth are no longer in vogue, assuming they ever were. Now, people spend huge amounts of money to make their teeth sparkling white. There are many products out there that promise you whiter teeth, however, some of them don’t work, or the ones that work use chemicals to bleach your teeth. So, if you are concerned about the chemicals and want natural alternatives to whiten your teeth, you have come to the right place.

Oil pulling: This method is used by Indians to whiten their teeth naturally. This method involves you swishing around coconut oil for 15 to 20 minutes in your mouth. Coconut oil is high in lauric acid, which is known for its ability to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. Constant oil pulling will reduce bacteria in the mouth, along with plaque and gingivitis, which then leads to whiter teeth.

Fruits and vegetables: Eat fruits and vegetables frequently and you might just be on your way to whiter teeth. Fruits and vegetables not only benefit your insides and skin, they help your teeth too. Crunchy raw fruits and vegetables can help rub plaque away as you chew. In particular, strawberries, cabbage, carrots, celery, pineapple and many more will help you with your teeth whitening journey.

Reduce sugar: If you want whiter teeth you can’t avoid limiting your sugar intake. Excess sugar intake encourages the growth of streptococcus mutans bacteria, the primary type of bacteria that causes plaque and gingivitis. Also, brush your teeth immediately after eating sugary things.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV): The main ingredient in ACV is acetic acid, which is known for killing bacteria. The antibacterial property of vinegar is what makes it useful for cleaning your mouth and whitening your teeth. However, constant and excess use of ACV might erode the enamel on your teeth. So you should limit your use of it. To be on the safe side, you should mix your ACV with plain water before using it.
