Malcomines, others win first post COVID-19 lockdown polo games

- By Ernest Ekpenyong

Jos based Malcomines polo team and kings of Abuja polo, Rubicon Aviation team led the pack of top performers that won their matches at the just concluded Post Covid-19 Lockdown tournament at the prestigious Keffi Polo Ranch in Keffi, Nassarawa State.

Murtala Laushi miners who finished runners-up in the race for the Majekodunmi Cup in their last competition, started from where they left off last February in Lagos, defeating Georgian defending champions, Abuja Rubicon in the opening game.

That victory that was not entirely unexpected saw the Miners jumping on the driving seat of the high-goal combats that are loaded with strong oppositions like the Lintex/Agad and home crowd favourites, Keffi Ponys.

Polo Royals reports that while the low flying Rubicon (1) side were trailing in the explosive game, their Rubicon (2) counterparts took to sparkling start defeating a crowded lowgoal competition to finish tops, leaving the long travelling Bichi Farms team from Kano to manage a runners-up prize.

Polo Royals also reports that competition in the medium-goal category of the mini tournament which was played behind closed arenas in strict adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines protocol saw the rising stars from the Fombina Kingdom of Adamawa, Haske & Williams team edging their hard fighting YBL opponents from Abuja in their opening game to clinch the intermediate title.

“It’s nice to be back together again after the lockdown and enjoying the game we all love with passion, said Honourable Aliyu Wadada, the Proprietor of Keffi Polo Ranch and the chief host of the event.

Honourable Wadada whose loaded Keffi Ponys team was billed to face last year’s Georgian Cup runners-up, Lintex/Agad in their opening game before rains that render the playing turf too slippery to play on, stated that the event was a welcome return for the players, patrons and enthusiasts who were so excited to witness the return of the noble game in Keffi.

“We are looking at concluding the final standings in the high goal category this weekend, weather permitting,” he added as he wished the teams safe trip to their respective bases.
