Kano: Scrapping of REMASAB, a serious setback

- Musa Gambo Maiduguri, Nigeria

The decision by the Kano state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to scrap the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) is not well thoughtout. The agency served as the only place where a commoners, employed as street cleaners, feel the dividend of democracy. But such people are now left to fend for themselves. Importantly, REMASAB was undertaking the responsibility of it fumigating the environment from the harm of mosquitoes, and sanitizes the environment. Now if you look at Kano metropolis, it’s full of refuse without being fully evacuated.

Again, as an agency created by law it is supposed to be dissolved by the law. It is also curious that a private company would be handed over a government agency and its property, as a substitute for the scrapped REMASA. They should use their resources. Because government Property is a public trust. And if they say they will generate power from the waste, what about the Tiga Hydro-power station which has not been completed despite the long time? Governor Ganduje should stop playing politics or serve some interests. Every Kano loving citizen is not in support of this act. Kano doesn’t belong to a single person but to all. I am strongly against this action and I feel it does not represent the will of Kano people. I am of the opinion that the government must have been misinformed about the consequences of the scrapping of an agency like REMASAB. I humbly advise the governor to have a rethink on this decision, for the future of the state.
