HEALTHY LIVING

The importance of drinking 4 litres of water daily

- Compiled by Izuegbunem Deborah

The saying “Water is life” is more than a saying, it is a fact because about 60 per cent of the body mass is made up of water and 71 per cent of the planet surface is covered with water. Body parts such as our kidneys need the right consumption of water to be able to function well. Benefits of consuming 4 litres of water daily are;

a. Regulates body temperature: Water that is being stored in the middle layers of our skin rises up to the skin surface as sweat when the body heats up. When it evaporates, it will then cool the body.

b. Enhances skin health: Proper hydration in the body will help keep the skin from appearing dry. Also, the skin is less vulnerable to disorders and premature wrinkling.

c. Gets rid of body waste: Enough consumption of water will help our bodies get rid of waste. Water is needed to form sweat and also the removal of faeces and urine.

d. Helps maintain blood pressure: Enough water in the body will result in the blood being thinner and therefore reduces the chances of high blood pressure.

e.Weight loss: For those on a diet journey, it’s important to incorporate a habit of drinking lots of water. Water helps to fill the body instead of sugary and carbonated drinks.

f. Boosts exercise performance: Research has shown that people who often drink water and go to the gym are able to work out easier and longer than people who are dehydrated.

g. For easy digestion: For our meals to digest and our bowels to work properly, it’s healthy for one to consume enough water after eating their meals. This reduces the chance of heartburn and stomach ulcer.

h. Helps lubricate joints: The cartilage in our joints and the disks of our spines are known to contain at least 80 per cent of water. Dehydration can often reduce the joint shocking ability which can cause joint pain.
