Staying Healthy this season

- Compiled by Rosemary Etim Bassey

The rainy season is here and as much as we enjoy the cool temperature and air, it’s important to remember that the rains come with certain factors that could affect our health. Common illnesses people face during the rainy season are cold, catarrh, malaria and asthma attacks. If not careful, this illness could become a critical health issue.

To stay healthy this season one should always remember to

a. Stay Warm: As much as we may enjoy the cool breeze on our skin, we must protect ourselves by dressing warmly. It’s the season of sweaters and turtlenecks. The drop in temperature can affect our body’s ability to fight off infections, making us more vulnerable to diseases.

b. Increase Vitamin C and Supplement intake: Proper intake of vitamin C during the rainy season will help fight off any antibodies and strengthen our immune system. Although people take supplements all year round, it’s important to stick to them more during this season.

c. Avoid street foods:

As much as you’d miss eating roasted yams or plantains, roadside meals are prone to diseases that may be airborne and waterborne and could cause serious health issues.

d. Stay clean and dry: During this season you must maintain very good hygiene. If coming out of a downpour, it’s important to take a bath after as rainwater is not 100% clean. Remove wet clothes as soon as possible and refrain from wearing damp footwear. For people with children, ensure your child has a bath if they decide to go play in the rain. e. No handkerchiefs: It’s common to have allergies pop up during this season. Avoid using a handkerchief if you have a runny nose as it’s the fastest way to spread the infection. It’s more appropriate to blow out your nose into tissue paper so you can throw it away afterwards and always sneeze into the elbow of your hands.

With this advent of COVID-19, it’s important that we all adhere to guidelines that will keep us from going to the hospital during this season.
