Proper ATM etiquette

- Compiled by Rosemary Etim Bassey

Proper etiquette at the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is not just a matter of common courtesy; it also ensures a smooth and secure experience for everyone. Here are some essential guidelines for ATM etiquette:

Wait your turn: Stand in line if others are already using the ATM. Respect the order of arrival, and don’t crowd the person currently conducting their transaction.

Have your card and pin ready: Don’t wait until you’re at the machine to start searching for your card or memorizing your PIN. Have them ready to minimize the time you spend at the ATM.

Maintain privacy: Shield your PIN when entering it. Use your body or hand to prevent prying eyes from seeing your code. This not only respects your privacy but also enhances your security.

Quick transactions: Be efficient. Complete your transaction swiftly, and if you need to perform additional tasks, step aside to allow others to use the machine.

Mind your space: Give the person using the ATM enough personal space. Don’t crowd or stand too closely, as it can make others uncomfortable and potentially compromise their security.

Keep conversations private: Don’t engage in loud phone conversations while at the ATM. This not only disrupts others but can also make you an easy target for potential thieves.

Don’t linger: Avoid standing at the ATM to count your money or check your receipt. You can do this elsewhere, ensuring you don’t create a bottleneck for other users.

Be prepared for technical issues: ATMs can sometimes malfunction or your card may get stuck. In such cases, be patient, and if necessary, report the issue to your bank.

Respect operating hours: ATMs may have operating hours posted nearby. Make sure you use them within the designated times to avoid causing inconvenience to others.

Be mindful of queues: In busy areas, form a single-file queue to maintain order. Don’t allow the presence of a queue to pressure you into hurrying or making mistakes.

Secure your card and money promptly: After completing your transaction, put your card, money, and receipt away immediately. Don’t stand at the ATM to organize your wallet or purse.

Report suspicious activity: If you notice any suspicious behaviour or individuals loitering around the ATM, it’s essential to inform bank security or law enforcement.

Dress appropriately: Dress modestly when visiting the ATM. Avoid flashy jewellery or clothing that may attract unwanted attention.

Children and pets: Don’t bring young children or pets to the ATM. They can be distracting and may make it difficult for you to concentrate on your transaction.

By adhering to these ATM etiquette guidelines, you not only ensure a smooth experience for yourself but also contribute to a more considerate and secure environment for all users.
