ETIQUETTE A simple DIY to make your home smell good

- By Nafisat Abdulsalam

Our homes are our havens. Home is where we feel the most comfortable. Therefore, making our home smell good is a priority. A house that smells nice makes the owner feel good. Good smells are also mood lifters. When your home smells good, you get a certain sense of fulfilment and happiness. To many, especially the ladies, a nice smelling home is a dream come true. How then do you achieve this without spending a fortune?

Keep your home clean: Before anything else, you should keep your home clean. A dirty home can never smell nice even if you used the most expensive home deodorizer or air freshener. So, sweep your house and its surroundings regularly, this should include hidden areas like under the cushions, carpet and bed. Dust and mop where necessary. Wash your toilet often. Change bed linens, window and door blinds frequently. Do not pile your dishes, wash them immediately after use.

Empty and wash your dustbin: Our Dustbins can be a store for foul odors. This is because it is where we dispose of our waste and garbage including kitchen garbage, food left overs and the likes. All these could emit bad odor and make the home smell unpleasant. This could also bring in flies and rodents leading to germs and bacteria thereby even becoming dangerous to our well-being. So empty and wash your dustbin thoroughly, do this at least once a week. To get rid of the lingering foul odor in your dustbin after washing, you can pour in a half cup of baking soda and rinse with warm water.

Let fresh air in: Fresh air is essential to drive away bad odor. So, open your windows and let in fresh air to replace the stale air inside your house with clean air from outside. Do this for at least half an hour every day.

DIY Simmering Pot

A simmer pot is a natural home deodorizer that is easy and inexpensive to make. All you need for a simmer pot are common fruits, herbs and spices you can easily find around you. You can make a simmer pot by boiling just a few slices of citrus fruit like orange and lime together with some cloves and mint leaf. All these simmered together can create a sweet scent that will envelope your home with a nice smell.

How to make a Simmer Pot?

· Heat up a good amount of water in a pot · Throw in your slices of orange and lime

· Add some apple peel and other fruits of your choice (If any)

· Add cloves

· Add mint leaf

· Put your stove on low heat

· Do not cover the pot, leave it open

· Let this simmer for at least 30 minutes before turning off your stove.

· As it simmers on low heat, the steam coming from it carries a nice aroma throughout your house and fills it with a nice sweet smell which can last up to 24 hours.
