Need for judicial transparency in the interpretation of the law

- Hadiza Ibrahim Ngulde wrote from the Department of Mass Communication University of Maiduguri

Dear esteemed members of the Nigerian judiciary, on this pressing concern that resonates deeply within the hearts of Nigerian citizens: there’s the need for transparency and clarity, particularly during the critical period of elections tribunal proceedings.

The judiciary stands as a beacon of justice, entrusted with the pivotal responsibility of upholding the rule of law and ensuring fairness in our democracy. However, there exists a significant gap in understanding and transparency, especially during the complex and sensitive times of electoral tribunal cases.

Nigerians often find themselves grappling with legal jargon and intricacies that make it challenging to comprehend the proceedings and the interpretations thereof. This lack of clarity often leads to confusion and a sense of disconnect between the legal process and the citizens it serves.

In the spirit of fostering a truly transparent and inclusive democracy, I earnestly implore the esteemed members of the judiciary to consider the following:

Simplification of legal language: During electoral tribunal cases, there is a dire need to communicate legal proceedings and decisions in plain and understandable language accessible to the general populace. This approach will bridge the gap between legal jargon and the understanding of ordinary citizens.

We urge the judiciary to prioritise transparency in electoral cases. Clear and comprehensive explanations of judgments, legal principles, and decisions will bolster public trust and confidence in the judicial process.

Also, initiatives aimed at educating citizens about legal processes, the meaning of legal terms, and the overall workings of the judiciary during electoral disputes can empower the populace to actively engage and comprehend the justice system.

Leveraging digital platforms, public forums, or community outreach programs can facilitate direct interaction between the judiciary and citizens, fostering a more inclusive and informed society.

Your commitment to transparency and accessibility will undoubtedly strengthen our democracy and foster a deeper sense of trust and confidence in the judicial system.
