Maintaining a healthy skin during Harmattan

- Compiled by Rosemary Etim Bassey

As the Harmattan season comes bearing cool and dry air, it also ushers in skin challenges for many individuals. The drop in humidity levels during this period can leave the skin feeling dry, flaky, and sometimes even irritated. However, with a thoughtful and consistent skincare routine, you can navigate the Harmattan season while keeping your skin radiant and healthy.

Hydration is key: The cornerstone of effective Harmattan skincare lies in hydration. Increase your water intake to ensure your body stays adequately hydrated. Water helps to replenish moisture from the inside out, combating the dehydrating effects of the dry air.

Gentle cleansing: Opt for a mild, hydrating cleanser that cleans without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Avoid harsh soaps or cleansers with high alcohol content, as they can exacerbate dryness.

Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells, allowing moisturizers to penetrate more effectively. However, be gentle, as over-exfoliating can further dry out your skin. Choose a gentle exfoliant with natural ingredients to reveal a fresh and glowing complexion.

Moisturise: Invest in a rich, emollient moisturizer to combat the dryness characteristic of Harmattan. Look for products with ingredients like shea butter, glycerine, or hyaluronic acid. Apply moisturizer immediately after cleansing to lock in hydration.

Lip care: The lips are particularly susceptible to dryness during Harmattan. Keep them soft and supple by using a nourishing lip balm. Look for formulations with ingredients like beeswax or cocoa butter for added protection.

Sunscreen protection:

Harmattan doesn’t mean you can skip sunscreen. In fact, the sun’s rays can be just as damaging during this season. Choose a broadspectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it generously to exposed skin, especially if you’ll be outdoors for an extended period.

Humidify your environment: Counteract the dry air by using a humidifier in your home or office. This helps maintain moisture levels in the air, preventing your skin from becoming excessively dry.

Warm, not hot, showers: While a hot shower may be tempting in the cool

Harmattan weather, it can strip your skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness. Opt for warm water and keep showers short to preserve your skin’s moisture.

Protective clothing: Shield your skin from the harsh Harmattan winds by wearing protective clothing, such as long sleeves and scarves. This not only helps to retain moisture but also protects your skin from environmental pollutants.

DIY masks and treatments: Pamper your skin with homemade masks and treatments. Ingredients like honey, yogurt, and avocado can provide deep hydration and nourishment. Create a spa-like experience at home, giving your skin the extra care it deserves during the Harmattan season.

By incorporating these skincare tips into your daily routine, you can combat the challenges posed by the Harmattan season and maintain a radiant, healthy complexion. Remember, consistency is key, and adapting your skincare routine to the changing seasons ensures that your skin remains resilient and glowing year-round.
