In the face of economic challenges and declining naira, Nigerians have turned to humour as a way to cope with the stress and uncertainty of daily life. From viral memes to clever one-liners, humour has become a popular way to talk about the economic situation. This is not to say that the situation is not serious, but rather that humour can be a powerful tool in difficult times. Humour can be a way to cope with a difficult situation, it is also important to be sensitive to the feelings of those affected by the economic crisis.

However, it can also be a powerful tool for social commentary and draw attention to issues that might otherwise be overlooked. The contemporary musicals and skit makers are a great deal of comic relief to the Nigerian economy. People tend to focus their attention on humour rather than putting the problems on their faces. Despite the potential drawbacks, there are also some advantages to using humour to address economic challenges. It breaks down barriers and builds relationships, especially in social gatherings. This is, especially important in a country like Nigeria, where different ethnic and religious groups often have tense relationships.

Furthermore, humour diffuses tension, makes light of a bad situation, and brings people together. So, humour breeds laughter which helps relieve stress, improve mood, and also helps to foster a sense of unity and solidarity. A common enemy, like a bad economy, can bring people together, and humour can be a way to unite people in the face of adversity. The behaviour of touts on the street can be very provoking, but attending to it humorously is the best way to avoid issues. There’s a saying in Yoruba “Gbogbo yo lon kora” “Everyone is agitated”.

Another potential advantage of using humour to address economic challenges is that it can help spread information and create awareness. Economic issues can be complex and difficult to understand, humour can be a way to make this information more accessible and easier to understand. For example, satire and political cartoons have long been used to comment on economic and political issues. Similarly, social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook have become important tools for spreading information and raising awareness about economic issues. Humour can be a powerful tool for reaching a large audience and making complex information more digestible.

On the other hand, there are also some potential drawbacks to relying on humour to address Nigeria’s economic problems. Jokes can sometimes be insensitive or even offensive, which can make the situation worse rather than better. However, the efficacious use of humour is indeed a powerful tool to help relieve stress, diffuse tension, and boost the nation’s economy through advertising.
