Farmers cry out as insecurity prevents dry season farming activities

- From Magaji Isa Hunkuyi, Jalingo

All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) Taraba State branch has said that insecurity is hampering farming activities in the state.

The Association therefore called on the state and security agents to make more efforts to secure farming communities in order to ensure safety of farmers.

The association’s chairperson, Hajiya Laraba Amina Abdul, made the call during the sales of fertiliser and other farm inputs for the 2023/2024 Dry season farming held at Farmer’s Unity Hall, in Jalingo.

She said insecurity situation in Taraba State has made agricultural activities unsafe in many parts of the state.

“Insecurity has led to farmers being unable to access their farms, which has resulted in decline in food production and therefore, there is urgent need to address the problem,” she said.

The chairperson said farmers are facing other challenges, apart from insecurity, which need to be addressed.

She said other challenges faced by farmers include lack of access to modern farming equipment, finance, and absence of extension services workers who are supposed to led farmers to modern farming technics.

Laraba explained that AFAN in Taraba State is working to support farmers and improve agricultural production as part of its contribution to food security in the country.

“Our association has partnered with Global Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Limited to provide farmers with fertiliser and other farm inputs at subsidized rate,” she said.

She disclosed that the association has also trained farmers on modern farming techniques and is advocating for the government to do more to address the challenges faced by farmers.
