Nigeria can’t achieve food security without women — AFAN
The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), women wing, has called on the federal government to strengthen female farmers in order to achieve food security in Nigeria.
The national woman leader of the AFAN, Mrs Enitan Onitiri, during a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, underscored the significant role of women in the agricultural sector, and urged concerted efforts to enhance the food system.
Onitiri highlighted the alignment of AFAN’s programmes with government’s agenda to improve food security, create jobs and reduce poverty. She also stressed the need for collaboration with various organisations to empower women in agriculture and improve the welfare of female farmers nationwide.
“We have a lot of programmes to empower women across the country in order to drive agric sector and position women where they are supposed to be, as far as agribusiness is concerned,” she said.
On her part, Omolara Abati
Svensson, the newly appointed special assistant to the national woman leader of the AFAN, expressed her commitment to empowering women in agriculture and addressing gender equality issues.
Ms Omolara emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment in agriculture and the need to address broader issues of gender equality and discrimination. She highlighted the lack of women’s voice in decision making and policy matters.
The women called on relevant agencies to support women at the grassroots through training, formation of cooperative societies and policy implementation to boost their agricultural productivity and nation-building drive.
