- From Abdulazeez Ibrahim, Kano

Twenty professional golfers and 231 amateur players have been registered for the inaugural captain’s golf tourney of the Kano Golf club. It will be noted that the Captain’s Day golf tournament is a tradition that requires the newly elected club captain to play a game, attracting participants from across the country and even internationally.

Golf enthusiasts in attendance are drawn from Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Katsina, Bauchi, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Korea, marking the return of competitive golf after a long period of absence in Kano.

The event spans two days, with the Emir of Kazaure, Najib Hussaini Adamu, playing alongside various captains of industries and the newly elected captain, Ambassador Ali Magashi.

David Emiana, Vice Captain of the Kano Golf Club, emphasized the motivation behind the event is to bring people, friends, and well-wishers together after a long drought of non-golf competition in Kano.

“We organized this competition as the Captain’s Day to mark the beginning of a new tenure of club executives and revamp the Kano Golf Club once again. We revived

some of the greens that were hard to play on, riding on the confidence people have in the new committee. That’s why, for the first time ever, we have had this number of players come to play in Kano.”

The Kano Golf Club, founded in 1908, holds a unique place in

West African history as the oldest and most esteemed golf club in the region. Its establishment is intertwined with the conquest of Kano by the Royal West Africa Frontier Force, led by Lord Frederick Lugard.

Over decades, the Kano golf course witnessed significant events, such as the 1922 tournament organized by Barclays Bank and a visit from Prince Edward of England in 1927. Notably, the iron chair he sat on remains at Hole No. 3, now part of a Nigerian Army heritage site.
